Where is YOUR Safe Spot?
I’ve been noticing an interesting phenomenon with my cats lately. They seem to enjoy hiding out in my bathroom cabinet. I’m not sure why they enjoy this dark spot, surrounded by boxes of Sinus Rinse packets and tampons. But they seem to love it, sometimes staying for hours on end.
As I was laughing at Bipp sleeping on the shelf, Bryan commented that the cabinet seems to be the cats’ safe spot. Those words – “safe spot” – got me thinking. And once again, I found writing inspiration from the pets in this house.
We all have places we consider our safe spots, right? A sacred place that makes us feel happy; where you can always go to rest, think or achieve solitude. A place that feels completely comfortable. A place to relax and feel truly at peace.
My safe spot is my bed. Oh, how I love my bed! It’s the epitome of comfort. A California King Tempur-Pedic mattress covered in gray-blue sheets and pillowcases. The fluffy down comforter is surrounded by a Calvin Klein Japanese flower motif. (Ever watched Sex and the City? It’s Carrie Bradshaw’s bed set. And no, I did not buy it to match Carrie.) The bed and sheets are couched within an Ikea bed frame. The bed is especially heavenly during the winter when I change the sheets to flannel.
I love my bed and feel that it’s completely mine. My restful space where I curl up with a book and relax. The ceiling fan above keeps the summer evenings cool. It’s my comfortable space where I go when I’m sad, sick or tired. I lay there and surround myself with sleep. This is the reason I despise dragging myself out of the bed in the morning (that, and the fact I’m up way too late writing these blog posts).
So what about you? Where is YOUR safe spot?

This week I have a cold and just got back from delivering my daughter back to college so I’m sad, and I have to say that bathroom cabinet is looking pretty good as a safe spot — I wonder if your cats would share it with me. For my safe spot, I have one corner of the family room couch that I usually sit on (if available…. I’m not fanatic about it if someone else gets there first). I do envy you your bed — sounds LOVELY!
I’m sure my cats will share the cabinet with you! I can see how you’re feeling sad right now too. Hang in there!
We have a small house on a small lake in eastern PA. I love sitting on the deck, looking at the water, reading a book. Heaven!
That sounds so nice! Can I come?
I love that you have Carrie Bradshaw’s bed set — even if you didn’t buy it on purpose, which I totally would have!
I think my safe spot is my living room couch, though now I am getting used to someone else’s. I guess it’s not so much the feel of the couch, but just usually when I am on it, I am zoning out, relaxing, reading, or catching up on TV. I think about sitting on that couch when I’m stressed at work!
I honestly think Carrie stole the bed idea from me! I hear you on the couch. If I had to list another favorite spot, it would be my couch where I love to read blogs, watch movies and eat ice cream at night. Totally relaxing!
First I can’t get over how organized your cabinet is! My safe spot is in front of my fireplace. I have the coziest chair which I just put in front of the fireplace with my cup of tea and a book ….
That’s just one cabinet. You should see the one under the sink! Your cozy chair by the fireplace sounds so nice! I bet it’s lovely in the winter with the fire.
Great post. Your cats are wonderful to inspire such deep comforting thoughts. I think we all need a safe spot even if it’s just a memory or dream in our hearts.
For stress relief & clearing my mind, my garden is my choice.
Oh, I like the idea of having a memory or dream to rely on as well. Great idea! And yes, I would think your garden would be your spot!
I never really gave much thought to my safe spot until this post, but I have to say that I agree with you – I love my bed and look forward to crawling underneath those covers, even in the heat of summer, is so comforting.
Me too. Sometimes Bryan will think it’s too hot on a summer night upstairs in the bed. But I just turn the fan on full blast and enjoy. I love my bed!
When I’m feeling overloaded, I definitely prefer my bedroom. I’ve never found bedding that I love, so it’s not the way it looks. But I have a very comfortable mattress and plenty of pillows and I always feel pampered. Sometimes I read, sometimes I nap, and sometimes I actually write there.
That sounds really nice. I love that you write on your bed too. That must be really comforting.
Leah, I have a list of things I want to write about, and this is on my list! So when I do write about it, sorry, I don’t mean to copy…. it will be awhile
But my safe spot is what everyone calls my “Hippie Chair.” It’s one of those big round basket chairs with a giant cushion. I have it sitting in the “Sunroom” (a tiny spot at the front of our house) by the window, looking out on the yard and a bird feeder. It’s my “healing place” and I feel like I’m in the womb when I’m sitting there. Love your photo!
Thinking in My Head
Thanks! And by all means, please write about this and let me know when you publish it on your blog so I can read it. Your “hippie chair” sounds nice too.
My safe spot is always invaded!
Bah hah! That’s funny!
My bed, definitely. Sometimes Toby, my tuxedo cat, disappears under the bed during the night and doesn’t come out until mid-morning. Tiki, the tabby, only seems to seek a safe spot when I’m out of town. Then she manages to get herself closed into my study or the guest room. She never does this when I’m home. She’s got to be sending a message.
Yes, I thinks she is. Cats are pretty darn smart, aren’t they?
I don’t think Tess liked getting found out in her secret spot! Cats are so funny…just love em.
I was going to say my bed, even before I got to the place where you say it yours too. I don’t answer the phone there, unless it’s someone I’m very close to. And I love to hide away there and read – if it’s winter, with a cup of hot chocolate. Yes, that’s my place to retreat and recharge. My safe spot.
I love it! And I don’t have a phone in my bedroom either. I don’t like the sound of the phone ringing waking me at night or in the morning. It’s just disruptive. And yes, Tess wasn’t happy I found her out. Oh well!
I think my safe spot is in my bedroom. That is where my writing desk is located by a window that looks out to the ocean. I listen to the sound of the waves and I feel like I’m completely and utterly out of reach.
OMG Annie, that sounds so heavenly. I love the idea of looking out your window at the ocean. So peaceful. Can I move in??
I’ve never thought of where my safe spot is but my favorite spot is my wicker chair in my bedroom near the window , to read , enjoy a cup of coffee or just look out ..it really helps me unwind !
That sounds nice! I think even a special chair or couch has that relaxing effect.
Our puppy has a safe spot…it’s with hubby. Whenever she gets scared, she runs to him and he is always there for her. I think he’s my safe spot, too. I do, however, love my bedroom.
That’s cute about your puppy. One of our dogs will hide in the bedroom closet as his safe spot. He’ll sometimes hide in Sophie’s room too. It’s cute.
My fat cat (not as fat as Bev D’.s but fat nonetheless likes to lay anywhere I am or in front of the French doors in my bedroom. As for me, my safe spot, like you is my bed. I have a beautiful desk where I some times sit and write, but most almost always, I sit atop my bed and write, read, sip wine, listen to music, watch movies, talk on end to the daughter ( well today is the last night we can talk… boohoohoo, we leave tomorrow).. my bedroom, nick named The Pink Palace, is my haven.
I love it! The idea of writing, listening to music, or sipping wine in a sacred spot is comforting.

For me, it’ probably my desk and chair in my bedroom. For the kitties, it seems to change frequently. One of them has taken to hiding in a very narrow spot behind a bed.
Great post. Your cats are wonderful to inspire such deep comforting thoughts. I think we all need a safe spot even if it’s just a memory or dream in our hearts.
