Eating Locally: A Taste of Mira Mesa

January 9, 2011

Bryan and I have a goal for 2011. We’ve committed to eating locally once a month this year. Meaning, each month we’re going to eat at a different restaurant in our community of Mira Mesa (in San Diego). Not a chain restaurant; but a local, independent restaurant. And each month I’ll write about our food adventure in the newly-created “Eating Locally” tab above.

Why are we doing this? It’s part of our commitment to our community. So many small “mom and pop” businesses are suffering in today’s economy. Rather than supporting local business, so many times we — just out of habit — eat at our favorite chain restaurant or shop at a known “big box” store . Yet if we want our community to sustain itself and the local business owners not to suffer, than we need to act (and eat) locally. This is why we’re changing our habits when we eat out.

This month we had dinner at Callahan’s Pub and Brewery, a local Irish pub and restaurant that opened its doors in 1989. I can’t believe we’ve lived in this community for more than five years and we’ve never eaten here before. We had a blast at Callahan’s! The atmosphere was great — very family friendly; the servers were upbeat; the environment was relaxed and fun.

Oh yeah, the food was awesome! And according to Bryan, the beer was even better. Callahan’s offers their own selection of signature brews (Bryan sampled two of them).  I took a difference approach to beer by ordering the jalapeno cheese beer soup in a bread bowl. It was delicious! Bryan enjoyed a traditional bangers, mash and pea dinner. And Sophie opted for a very sophisticated grilled cheese and fries from the kid’s menu. And we splurged on mud pie for dessert.

The food and drinks were well worth the money (which wasn’t even that much for the three of us, drinks and dessert). Plus, Callahan’s offers a daily special they promote at the restaurant and on their Facebook page. We will definitely be going back to Callahan’s, hopefully soon! I’m so excited to have found a local restaurant that we can enjoy and support.

This post — or any of the forthcoming Eat Locally posts — is not an advertisement and I’m not getting paid to write this. This is my family’s local eating experiences and our way to support the Mira Mesa community.

Ohhh yummy!! It has always been a goal of mine to find some cute family owned Italian or Mexican food restaurant where I go all the time and they start to recognize me & my invisible kids and husband. Way to support the MM, SB!

There is a small restaurant in my town that opened about a year ago and it is really the only place in town that I want to go now when my husband and I go on a date. The owner and chef prepares all local food and it is the most delicious food I’ve ever had! Good for you supporting your community and good food! 🙂
