Questions for YOU, My Readers!

August 19, 2011

As I was glancing at the list of 100 blogs I had accumulated on my Google Reader (that’s just two days worth!), I started wondering how us “blog-obsessed” keep our blogging world organized.

I decided to do some research by asking the experts — YOU! So readers, PLEASE don’t be shy! Here are my questions and I need your answers.

1. How do you keep track of the blogs you follow? I use Google Reader. What about you — Google Reader? WordPress subscriptions? Bookmarks? E-mail subscriptions?

2. How many blogs do you follow and what’s your process for reading them? Do you sit down at the same time each day and read them all? Do you skim and only read the ones you really like? Do you read throughout the day?

3. How many posts per week do you like to read from a blogger you follow? Using this blog for example, I post approximately three times per week. Is that too much? Too little? Would you read if I posted more or less frequently?

And speaking of blogs, I created a brand new page here at Leah’s Thoughts: Blogs I Love. This is the new “blogroll” where I  conveniently categorized a sampling of the blogs I follow (page is still a work in progress). Take a look when you have a few minutes (or you’re bored at work). And please tell me if you see any errors (after all, I did this at 11 p.m. while drinking a Diet Coke).

Thanks for including me in your blog roll.
I’m still new at this so not sure how well I can answer your questions. Definitely can see how blogging and reading other blogs can take up all day and night! I’m subscribing through WordPress. I read tags a lot- looking for others writing about similar topics, trying to make connections and build my readership- it’s very slow.
I like about 2-3 posts per week (I am trying to manage writing 2). By the way, you might want to check out C.Hope Clark- great blog about writing.

    1. I subscribe to the blogs I read via WordPress. I’m also friends with several of my favorite bloggers and I can follow their posts via the Facebook newsfeed (this is actually better for me b/c I have been checking Facebook more often than I check WordPress). I think I tried the Google reader one time, but it seems like I couldn’t see how the whole blog page and that’s half the fun for me.
    2. I follow 17 blogs. I tend to read them willy-nilly throughout the day with no specified process…it’s more like whenever I can fit it in.
    3. In theory I like reading a post a day. In practice, 3 per week is much more manageable. I get behind sometimes, but not as badly with reading 3/week.

  3. August 19, 2011 6:26 am

Well, I think you know that I love my Google Reader! But I also follow some blogs via email subscription or just when I happen to see their post on Facebook. FB is especially helpful for some blogs I follow that have contributors that post throughout the day so I don’t want every new post in my Reader or inbox. If I happen to see it on FB and it sounds interesting, I’ll click on it.

I try to read blogs a little in the morning, at lunch and then again in the evening. But sometimes I go days without checking out my reader. I have given myself permission to just check “mark all as read” and just start over with a clean slate if that’s what I need to do!

I think 3x per week is a good amount for a reader (I wish I could accomplish that as a writer!). For me, I just try to go with the flow in terms of my reading and not feel guilty or obligated to read or write. If there is a day or week that I’m just focused on other things, then I let myself!

Thanks for the discussion (and for including me on your blogroll!).

    1. I’ve found that the best way for me to read blogs is to sign up for the e-mail subscription. I forget to go check my Google Reader sometimes, so I’ll get behind.
2.I read each blog when I happen to get the e-mail, usually in the morning. I’ll check the Google Reader later in the day if I remember. I’m not sure how many I follow, but I think there are probably twenty that I read regularly.
    3. I like to read 1-3 posts per week for each blog I follow. That way I feel like I’m in touch, but not overwhelmed.
Thanks for adding me to your blog roll. I love how you have it organized into categories.

Reader and Twitter! I don’t follow nearly as many blogs as you do, because I find I give the ones I really truly heartfelt enjoy less quality feedback and appreciation if I try to keep up with many. Do you have a hard time keeping up?

And you post just right! 🙂

  6. August 19, 2011 8:46 am

I prefer to follow via email subscription. It’s easiest for me to focus on them that way. I don’t know how many I read a week, probably 15-20, although the number is growing. I skim them initially, to see what peaks my interest, then go back if something does.

I post on my own blog 3/times a week. I find it annoying if others post more often, unless it’s clear from the beginning (I have a couple colleagues who post daily and their blog has “daily” in the title). So 1-3 times a week, and I’m guaranteed to read it.

I mostly read blogs through Google Reader since I have an app on my phone. That way, I can glance through and read what looks interesting (good headlines are key!), then mark the rest as read. It’s great for some quick reading when I’m waiting for the trolley or up at night feeding the baby. And, since it’s through Google Reader, I also have a widget on my iGoogle home page, so I can skim headlines and quickly read through interesting posts on my home or work computer. In total, I probably read through Google Reader about three or four times a day (during my morning commute, mid-day/afternoon, evening commute and/or once at night).

I follow a wide variety of blogs, so I have a vetting process that I go through. I have RSS feeds bookmarked on my computer and, if I find myself reading most of the posts for a particular blog, I’ll add it to Google Reader. Right now, I’m following (and regularly reading) about a dozen blogs through Google Reader. But, I’m currently vetting about three dozen blogs to see if they rise to the top of my list. After a month or so goes by, I clean up the RSS bookmarks and delete the blogs I don’t find compelling enough to read. I don’t necessarily stop reading them — for example, if I follow the blog author on Twitter, I’ll click on links to post if I find them relevant — but, it makes the blog-reading process more manageable.

As far as posting goes, I think 3-4 times a week is good for personal blogs. More than that and it seems overwhelming. And my favorite blogs seem to make an effort to post on the same days each week, like Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

I just realized I forgot to mention that I only spend about 10-15 minutes each time reading blogs. Honestly, a lot of it is skimming, but if I really find the topic/post fascinating, I’ll spend that entire time reading if need be. So, in total, I probably spend an hour a day reading blogs. Again, that’s because I follow a wide variety of blogs from pop culture to personal to topical blogs.

I use g-mail and google reader Leah, plus I follow blogs on Facebook. I probably follow 50 and spend at least 3 hours a day following other blogs which is ridiculous. When you are starting out though it is important to follow others so they will follow you. People whose blogs I follow faithfully but who have never been to mine once I eventually stop, because that is simply not fair. I like to follow 3 – 4 posts per week and that is what I do myself. Anymore than that is simply too much – overload; and I feel like others are infringing on my personal space and wall too much. Hope this is not too blunt girlfriend!

  9. August 19, 2011 11:51 am

I also use Google Reader, and I follow 255 blogs — WOW I know that sounds high. But I have them broken down into blogs I check daily (about 50) and those that I check less frequently. I also have a blogroll on my blog, whichi lists the last post for each blog I list there. These 16 blogs (like yours) are ones I read *immediately* when I notice a new post.

Of the daily blogs I read — I estimate 20 to 30 — I skim them first, then read thoroughtly if pertinent…. I know you didn’t ask about comments, but…. I ALWAYS comment on my “blogroll” blogs, and I try to comment on all the blog posts I read, unless I just can’t find any relevancy at all to me. I usually do read off and on throughout the day when I need a break. I also pick up other blogs to read on Twitter…. I’m beginning to think I do nothing BUT read blogs after writing this! 🙂

As for how often I like to see posts from bloggers I follow? As many as they can write! I love that you post about three times a week, it’s what I’ve settled into at the current time for my blog, too. I know some weeks you post more often, and I love reading your posts whenever they’re up!

(p.s. thank you for being such a dependable blogger — both in frequency but also in entertainment, enjoyability, and creativity!)

  10. August 19, 2011 11:59 am

I just visit everyone that leaves comments! I like to think of it as a lot of conversations!

  11. August 19, 2011 5:05 pm

Once I’ve determined to follow a particular blog, I add it to my list via Blogger. Then, every time I log in to Blogger, it tells me if there is a new post by any of the blogs I follow. I’m not very tech-savvy, so this is a quick and easy way to do it without clogging my email.

As for number of posts, it depends on the blog. If they are quick, light, short posts, every other day or so is great. I have a few blog friends who post longer, more thought-provoking posts that I have to read more slowly and digest more deeply. Those, I can’t handle more than once a week.

I follow about twenty blogs and read them as the posts come out. I have been known to add folks, either because I found them on SheWrites or BlogHer and love their content, or because someone new comments on my blog. It can get out of control, so I try to dedicate a little time (no more than an hour) per day to read and respond to blogs.

  12. August 19, 2011 6:28 pm

Wow Leah…thank you for this post. I have been wondering the same thing. I may be somewhat of an anomaly because in the beginning my only goal in blogging was to connect with other writers and learn what the whole thing was all about. Whether they liked or hated my work, it was nice to get the instant feedback (well, not instant…but there were a few who responded and when they did, I was overjoyed.) My goal has changed considerably since then. As far as your original question….when I run across a blog I like, I subscribe. I better get with the program and expand that search to Google Reader!

  13. August 19, 2011 7:55 pm

I’m just like Caryn, emails, Facebook and twitter. I tried to comment on all the post the same day, but it makes it difficult now, since I’m signing up for more and more. It’s a great idea new page for all your blogrools, I might steal it 😉

  14. August 19, 2011 9:45 pm

Hi Leah! First off – diet coke at 11pm is ALWAYS a good idea! I find that you and I are on-line the same time a LOT! I spend a couple hours in the morning reading and replying to blogs as well as evening hours. I use google reader the most, but if I’m a HUGE fan – I subscribe via e-mail so I won’t miss them (You’re an e-mailer, baby!).

I usually try to get through ALL my blogs I follow and leave a comment every day. I have, however, found that I sometimes have a hard time keeping up….but I will always make sure I return a comment…

I have discovered that I want to read these blogs – even if I wasn’t a blogger – so it’s not a hardship or a chore – it just takes time…

The other thing that takes a large block of my time is prep work for MY blog. Because I have to research my recipes, shop, cook and photograph before I can sit down at my computer. So far, blogging 5 days a week has worked out well, but I wonder if the time will come when I have to move down to 3. I eat every day, so I usually have things to blog about….what you see is usually our dinner 5 minutes later!

When you wrote this – were you expecting such detailed answers? I know you’ve had quite a few of them!

  15. August 19, 2011 9:46 pm

I accidentally hit the submit button before I could say – THANKS for having me on your blog roll….I am deeply touched!

  16. August 20, 2011 12:28 am

I actually subscribe to a lot of blogs. I also use Google Reader but I don’t often have time to check that list. I also do what Blond Duck does and read posts of folks who leave comments. My question to you and everyone else commenting here, is how do you juggle blogging and reading other blogs? It’s a quandary and a constant struggle. It’s late. What was the question? Oh yeah, something about when do I read other blogs? Whenever I can!

  17. August 20, 2011 5:52 am

I’m always trying to figure out the best way to organize my favorite blogs! I have some on my wordpress reader – some are friends/family, and then there are homeschool, craft, recipe, and personal blogs I want to make sure I don’t miss. The others are bookmarked in specific categories – food/recipes, homeschool, crafts, etc. I check my wordpress reader every day, and every so often I’ll check my bookmarks to see if there are updates. Good thing for the kiddos’ naptime; sometimes it takes me a while to get caught up! There are just so many great people and resources out there, it can get overwhelming!

  18. August 20, 2011 2:41 pm

I tend to keep track of my favorite 20 blogs or so, my “dailies” or at least weeklies, and I also like to check in on folks who leave comments on my blog. I don’t use readers because the blogs look different in them and I like them “regular.” I also click on whatever is interesting on Twitter and find a lot of blogs that way. I also use my friends’ blog rolls too!

Thanks for stopping by Full Soul Ahead today!

I have a blog roll on my blog so I just keep glancing at it and if I see a new post with a title that interests me, I read it….I think I follow more than a 100 blogs or so!!

  20. August 20, 2011 6:22 pm

Hi Leah, I keep them in my favorites and just dip in whenever I feel like reading. I have my favs – yours is one of them – and I usually leave comments on my favs. I don’t like to post more than once a week, and sometimes not even that often, because I work on the WIP first, and blog second. And I don’t usually read any blog more than two or three times a week…I just don’t have time, even though I do enjoy them all.
    Hope this helps!

  21. August 20, 2011 8:00 pm

I’m so low-tech! I follow about 30 wonderful ones and read in the mornings when I’m in town (I’m in california now but wanted to get back to you!) I can follow someone once a week now time-wise. I admire your organizational skills! Many thanks for including me on your blogroll, Leah! These are all such wonderful questions to ask the blog community, too.

  22. August 21, 2011 4:08 am

I follow about 30 blogs and read most of the posts they make. I don’t think there’s really a too much posting on a blog. Sometimes I posts alot of times a week and sometimes I post only once a week. You did a wonderful job organizing your links. I really like the way you have them in categories. Thanks so much for adding me to your blog links. You made me very happy. 🙂

  23. August 21, 2011 10:11 pm

Hi Leah! To answer your questions:

    1. I do all email subscriptions.
    2. I follow, at the most, 10 blogs. I don’t read every entry that enters my inbox. I’ll click on a post if the headline really catches my attention, or if I know it’s a blogger I haven’t read in a couple of weeks. I like to be loyal to MY loyal readers, so I read them first. 🙂 When time counts, they’re ALWAYS my first picks.
    3. I’ll usually only read one post a week from a blogger that I like. That’s because I try and split up my time amongst the several bloggers I follow.

I think that just about covers it! 🙂

  24. August 21, 2011 10:51 pm

I plan to personally reply to all of your comments because they are fascinating! I have so enjoyed reading everyone’s thoughts and methods on blogging. Very useful information. Perhaps I’ll compile your thoughts for a future blog post! Thank you all!

  25. August 22, 2011 8:35 am

    –Great Questions.
I subscribe to about 30 or more blogs.
I do not skim. I read every blog & comment of all of them & comment on everybody who reads mine. Whew.
It’s Damn Exhausting, but worth it.
Blogging is a superb platform to scream, yell, make your opinion known, and meet other bloggers.
    I loooooooooooove it 🙂 xx
PS.. I post about 3-4 times per week.

  26. August 22, 2011 6:10 pm

I use Google Reader. I keep it in List mode, so that it streamlines my reading. I do follow lots of blogs, so when I sit down to read them, I just read the posts whose titles interest me. I know, that sounds horrible. But I really don’t have time to read everything. If there’s a blog I haven’t been reading much of for awhile, I just unsubscribe. It’s heartless, but this saves me time while keeping me in touch with the blogs & bloggers I care about.

  27. August 22, 2011 8:15 pm

Great question, Leah. It’s a problem that’s been bugging me. I have finally started using Google Reader. First I bookmarked, but didn’t remember to check the bookmark. Then I did e-mail subscriptions, but on a busy e-mail week I’d lose track of those. So now I’m doing Google. My problem is I get caught up in reading when I should be writing. I’ve not disciplined myself in that way yet. I got some good ideas for organizing my blog time from your readers.

  28. August 24, 2011 12:11 am

Thank you for writing this post Leah ..its been so wonderful reading how everyone subscribes and catches up on blogs they love .. I don’t have a fixed routine on reading them but I do try and catch up on my favorites once everyday even if I don’t comment the same day .. As for no. of posts I think its relative …in some blogs more is less and in others less is more 🙂

  29. August 26, 2011 9:05 am

Hi Leah, just getting caught up here on some reading. I’m am a very unorganized blogger! There is no rhyme or reason to how I blog or read blogs. The biggest reason for this is probably because I’m still trying to figure everything out. Not all blogs I read have a subscription option. Some are on Blogger and some are on WordPress. At this point I probably follow less than 50 blogs and when and how I read them depends on my mood and how much spare time I have. Sometimes I will glance at a post and come back to it and comment later. Other times I will read the post think about it for a while and then post a comment on another day and sometimes I just don’t comment at all! These are probably not the kind of answers you were looking for. Now when I have more time I’m going to come back to this post and read all your followers comments so maybe I can get some kind of system down!

    Have a great weekend!

Oh! Thank you for including me in your “Blogs you love,” it is much appreciated!

  30. August 27, 2011 2:21 pm

I also use Google reader. I follow about 30 or so blogs. I vary them as my interest change. I mostly follow gluten free cooking sites, Mom bloggers and friends.

I read when i have time mostly on my droid phone but sometimes on the ipad and rarely on my PC.

    • August 27, 2011 10:26 pm

Thanks for stopping by! It’s funny how our interests change, don’t you think? I could be really into cooking blogs one week and motherhood blogs the next.

  31. August 31, 2011 6:04 pm

    Great questions!

~Currently, my tracking system is a hodgepodge. I have some on blogger, some on wordpress, some via email, and some I catch through Twitter. It’s not a good system, but it’s what has evolved over the past couple of years.

~I’m not sure how many blogs I follow. If a blog piques my interest I will usually follow it. Like Shari, I tend to read posts with titles that interest me, and I read my readers first. I catch up on my blog reading when I don’t have much to reply to in my email, a blog post to write, or social media stuff to do. Or when I’m procrastinating something.

~I think 3-4 posts a week is just right. Of course, that’s how many I’ve been doing, so I suppose I’m biased. 🙂 However, any more than that and I start to feel overwhelmed.
