Strawberry Fields Forever

June 15, 2011

Sophie, Bryan and I went berry picking at the Carlsbad Strawberry Fields. The fields seem to go on forever (you can almost hear The Beatles song in the background); and the fact that they’re full of juicy red strawberries is just amazing to me. Armed with a small bucket, we made our way to the fields and started berry picking (and eating).

I guess the question remains … What will we do with these luscious strawberries? Jam, shortcake or berries with whipped cream? Of course this is assuming Bryan and I don’t eat them all on their own. Sophie, our precious berry-picker, refuses to eat fruit.

Strawberry picking is a wonderful activity for anyone, and if you get to make jam afterwards, so much the better! Freezer jam tastes the absolute best. I love the perfume of strawberries. Sooooo good!

Yum! Those look so delicious! I have never been berry picking in my lie and I’ve always wanted to go. I’m looking forward to going with both the girls when the little one is old enough. Tonight I’m hoping to make a trip to the farmer’s market for some fresh ones. I could eat two pounds of strawberries all by myself!

yummmmmm Last time I got a bunch of strawberries I made the classic. Home-made shortcake with home-made whipped cream. All you could hear in the room was ohhhhh’s and ahhhhh’s.

I want to do that! We live not far from Plant City, known for their Strawberry Festival. Unfortunately, we are still trying to determine if our little guy is allergic!

Maybe we’ll do a different kind of berry picking.

Love the photos – and what a DOLL Sophie is.

I used to pick strawberries on Camano Island outside of Seattle when I was a kid. If we filled a huge flat (at least it looked like a huge box when I was 8) we received 50 cents. It was fun, but brutal if you were trying to make money. What great memories you made that day…not to mention…great eating!

Reminds me of my childhood; I actually HATED picking strawberries because I had to do it every summer with my grandmother. She made jellies and jams, and would take me to all the local patches to help. Plus, my mom had her own strawberry patch, so it seemed ALL I did was pluck berries. Now, however, what I wouldn’t DO for a patch of ripe, delicious strawberries. We definitely don’t see them in the desert! My mom still grows them, and I still long for the days of homemade, piping hot strawberry shortcake. Ummm… If you’re wondering, that’s my vote: shortcake. With berries/sugar and lots of whipped cream on top.

that shot of wee Soph just strolling confidently down Strawberry Lane? My favorite!

Wonderful … and delicious! My favorite dessert of ALL TIME is fresh Strawberry Shortcake with real whipped cream … mmmmm… to die for.

    Cheers! MJ
