“But I love finding the Easter eggs you hide …”

This was not in the plans for last night. I’ve been hiding Easter eggs for Sophie since she was little. But this year, I wasn’t planning to stuff the plastic eggs with candy and hide them. First off, all my holiday stuff is still in boxes. Second, Sophie wanted a Billie Eilish sweatshirt and a phone case for Easter (both of which are delayed in shipping). I did buy her some candy, but planned to give it to her as a gift today.

But when I told Sophie I wouldn’t be hiding eggs this year, a very sad look of disappointment came to her face. “Oh, okay … but I love finding the eggs you hide …” she said, and then she started crying. I almost started crying too. I gave her a hug and agreed to find the bag of plastic eggs, and stuff and hide them in the house.

Sophie is 12. As I post this at 10:15 a.m., she’s still asleep. She is very much a pre-teen and has plans to dye her hair blue this week. But all she wanted was to wake up this morning and search for those plastic colored eggs filled with bits of childhood magic. Especially given all that’s happening right now, how could I deny her that little piece of happiness? 🐰💕
