Barbara Kingsolver wrote a masterpiece with this story about a young boy growing up in rural Appalachia … childhood, loss, the foster care system, opioid addiction, friendship, creativity, survival, love, resiliency, hope are just a few of what Demon faces from birth to young adulthood.
Kingsolver was inspired by Charles Dickens to write this modern day retelling of “David Copperfield.” Demon’s voice and personality was so distinct, so real, I forgot that it was Kingsolver who actually wrote the book. How she was able to capture his honesty, thoughts and feelings is a wonder. There are so many incredible quotes in this story. Other than the one above that perfectly captures the theme of this book, this was one of my favorites …
