Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about a scene in the movie “Contact” (one of my favorites). Tom Skerrit’s character says to Jodie Foster’s Ellie Arroway, after he, essentially, stole her chance to journey to space:
“Ellie, I know you must think this is all very unfair. … I wish the world was a place where fair was the bottom line. Where the kind of idealism you showed at the hearing was rewarded, not taken advantage of. Unfortunately, we don’t live in that world.”
And Ellie replies: “Funny, I always believed that the world is what we make of it.”
The world is what WE make of it.
I had several thoughts written to expand on that sentiment. But, I think I’ll let Ellie’s idea and words speak for itself.
