Old College Friends

One Saturday night during my sophomore year of college, I was holed up alone in my dorm room at San Diego State University. Friends were out having fun at fraternity parties, and I was likely watching television and drinking a Diet Coke. And then a knock sounded from my door and there was Becky on the other side, holding a plastic tote of beauty supplies.

“Do you wanna do pedicures with me?” Becky asked.

I don’t know if I had even had a pedicure at that point in my life, nor had I started buying foot pumice stones or body creams from Bath and Body Works.

“Sure!” I said, and off we went to the dorm bathroom where I learned how to give myself a pedicure.

Becky was part of the friend crew I hung out with, but we’d never spent time, just the two of us, until that Saturday night. After we bonded over feet, we became pretty tightly-woven together for the next several years of college. We spent nearly every weekend going to the movies, eating chicken Cesar salad and breadsticks from Oscar’s restaurant, and studying (or attempting to) in coffee shops. We both loved the same things … books, writing, music, food, movies, coffee shops and the like.

After graduating college, Becky moved to Seattle and I began my job at the public broadcasting station. I visited her a few times and we kept in touch, but didn’t spend too much time together because distance and life happens.

This weekend, I made a quick trip to Becky’s new home in Carrollton, Georgia and met her husband, Stephen. We had such a wonderful time reconnecting, sharing memories, watching Stephen and his band perform, seeing the sights, eating Southern food and the like. Thank you, Becky and Stephen, for a wonderful weekend. I’m so happy we could reconnect and make new memories together. ❤️
