Reflections on 8 Years of Running

Today is my running anniversary. Eight years ago, after only living in Indiana a little over two months, I went outside to run because I wanted to feel something different. Unbeknownst to me, that run would change the course of my life, in so many ways.

A few years ago, I wrote a personal essay about that first run and published it on Medium and my blog. … This semester, I’m teaching a narrative essay writing unit in my two English Composition/Research Writing classes and I shared my story with them as a personal narrative example.

I told the students that a narrative doesn’t have to be a story about a huge life crisis; but rather one moment of change. It could be something as small and (seemingly) insignificant as me going out for my first run.

Since it’s been several years, I’m sharing that story again today — on the anniversary of the day that changed (saved) my life.

You can read my story through the link in my profile bio.
