Running Without Sight

When I was running the Carmel Half Marathon a few weeks ago, I saw a man in front of me running roughly the same pace.
Actually, before I saw him, I saw two people on both sides of him. The backs of their bright yellow shirts read “guard.”
I focused a bit more closely at the man between them and saw he had the full marathon bib attached to him.

He was also blind.

I admired this man — someone I only shared a road with for a few minutes — moving freely outside on the marathon course.
He didn’t let his sight keep him from doing what he loved (because NOBODY runs a marathon unless they love running).

Running is about feeling the air around you, your feet hit the ground and the movement of your body through the wind. You don’t need eyesight for that. You need drive and desire, trust and love.

Running is not about limitations … It’s about feeling limitless.

In that moment, I told myself that if I ever find myself faced with that same challenge, I will do exactly what he was doing … running.
