Scenes from the South Park Walkabout

There’s an amazing little community here in San Diego called South Park (not named for the TV show). This is such a neat community. The homes are in the craftsman style and in walking distance to the stores, which are all unique and not part of national chains. The streets are filled with all sorts — single folks, families with kids, and dogs. We were introduced to South Park by our friends who live there and have let us crash their neighborhood for dinner and events such as the Walkabout.

This place has such community spirit that is evident in the Walkabouts. The South Park Walkabouts happen four times a year — spring, summer, harvest and holiday. All the shops stay open late and welcome you into their stores, offering treats and friendly local folks.  Bryan and I love this community and have fantasized about what it would be like to live in such a different environment.

This weekend, Bryan, Sophie and I drove to South Park for the summer Walkabout. We had a great night, visiting the stores, sampling the local fare, and listening to live music. I found an awesome egg beater and vintage typewriter. Didn’t buy either, but I did love that typewriter! Sophie got an airbrush tattoo and a free bang trim (thank goodness!). We ended the evening with Sophie getting her face painted with a butterfly image, which was smudged off in 5 minutes after a tantrum. Money well spent!
