September 11, 2001 … It’s been 24 years and this day will never not haunt me. I remember the tears, the confusion, the sadness and fear. … But, today more than ever, what I remember most are the days and weeks that followed.
I remember how America came together and united in the face of tragedy … the flags that flew and how we all felt a sense of community. Because as scary as that act of terrorism was, there was a collective safety that also existed. That we were all in this fight together. That we were truly united, and our neighbor was not our enemy.
I don’t believe we will ever get back to that kind of unification in this country and that makes me incredibly sad. Not just for me, but for Sophie and the students I teach and coach, and future generations that will never know that kind of world.
Former President George W. Bush said in his statement yesterday, “May God guide America toward civility.” … I don’t ever want to go back to such a tragedy as September 11, 2001. And I’m not suggesting this country was perfect 24 years ago. But I deeply long for the days when we were united states and not divided ones. 🇺🇸💛
