At the beginning of May, I added something new to my routine. I started doing strength training that was specifically designed for runners. I’d been following Dr. Lisa Mitro, a runner and physical therapist, for some time and I signed up for her runner-friendly strength program for the month of May. It was easy … only three, 30-minute sessions per week and all I needed was weights and a few bands. And I could do the workouts from my living room.
On May 3, I ran the Indy Mini half marathon and at mile nine, I was so sore, even though I had been consistently running. This was not good, especially since I had a marathon to run in June. I kept up with Lisa’s strength program and come marathon day, I really felt the difference. I was shocked at how strong my legs felt throughout the race and I recovered so much easier and faster than any marathon (or half) before.
I now do Lisa’s 45-minute sessions, still three per week. I love the workouts and I also like not having to go to a gym. I can feel how much stronger my legs and lower body are, and I’m also not plagued with intermittent lower back pain anymore. … This is not a paid post. I just like to share what’s been working for me and encourage others to do the same. 🏃🏻♀️💪🏼🏋🏽♀️
