Ten of Swords

There’s a tarot card called the Ten of Swords. It depicts a man lying face down with ten swords in his back and the sky above him dark, ominous. At first glance, the card suggests defeat. … However, there’s more to this card if you look closely. Beneath the darkness, the sun is rising on the horizon and the sea in the background is blue and calm. While the Ten of Swords is often considered an ominous card, it actually suggests the age-old adage that the hour is darkest before the dawn. That even if the deepest of defeat, there is always the opportunity for hope and light.

This morning I ran in the cemetery and as I turned a corner to the highest point, the view of the skyline struck me enough to stop and really look at what was in front of me. The cold, dark stormy clouds hung in the sky over the gravestones, dark trees and still-bare branches. But between all that, there was a layer of beautiful light in the horizon. And all I could think about in that moment was the Ten of Swords.

The cemetery is not typically part of my Monday morning route. But my legs took me in that direction and I didn’t fight them … now I know why.
