Lately it seems like every other day brings rain showers, which I supposed is par for the course for April. We’ve had a few downpours and the forecast is for more of the same through the evening.
Springtime rain reminds me of a scene in one of my favorite movies, Disney’s “Saving Mr. Banks.” It’s about P.L. Travers, the woman who wrote the “Mary Poppins” books, and how the movie came to be made. The scene that comes to mind is when the uptight Mrs. Travers (Emma Thompson) tells her chauffeur (Paul Giamatti) that she misses the rain in England and she doesn’t like the “overbearing” and constant Los Angeles sunshine.
“The rain brings life,” she said, with a slight, wistful smile.
From the driver’s seat, Giamatti cranes his head around to face Travers. And with a smile, he said, “So does the sun.”
Those words have always stuck with me.
